Travel to Nilaveli
Most visitors come to the Trincomalee area to visit the twin resorts of Uppuveli and Nilaveli, lying on a swathe of beautiful golden sand a few kilometres north of the city.It is only 85km (53 miles) from the Habarana Junction along the almost straight A6 to the east-coast harbour city of Trincomalee. Despite repeated disruptions during the civil war and, more recently, significant tsunami damage, both resorts have somehow kept going against the odds .
Development is at present confined to a couple of large resort hotels and a cluster of low-key guesthouses, and the atmosphere is thoroughly silent. Uppuveli is also the jumping-off point for boat and snorkelling trips to nearby Pigeon Island, which boasts colourful tropical fish and patches of live coral. The best time to visit the broad golden sands of the beaches of Uppuveli and Nilaveli, to the north of Trincomalee’s huge bay, is between May and October, when the island’s west-coast beaches suffer from the monsoon.
