Mattala Rajapaksa International Airport
Strategically located to connect to over 60 per cent of the world within eight hours Mattala Airport will be the first airport in Sri Lanka to have A380 flight facilities. The new state of the art airport also boasts a vast 12,000 square-meter international terminal building as well as a 1 million square foot duty free.
Sri Lankan Airlines Operates domestic service linking to Bandaranaike International Airport near Colombo (Temporarily stopped – 2015), and Mattala Airport.Some charter flights filled with sun-seeking holidaymakers may fly direct to Mattala Airport from other nations.
An information desk is situated in the public area. English is spoken by information assistants.
From Hambantota, follow the A2 CGHW Highway north, turning left onto the Airport Entrance Road after around 25km (15 miles). Airport Road leads westbound to the airport complex from this thoroughfare.
Two banks are located in the public lobby, both of which offer currency exchange facilities. ATMs are available in the ‘outer porch’ area.
There is a 24-hour post office in the ‘outer porch’, and public telephones are available throughout the terminal. Communications counters in the departures area provide international calls, email and fax services.
A restaurant serving international and local fare is located airside in the transit area.
Limited shopping facilities, including retailers selling duty-free goods and local souvenirs, can be found in Departures.
A left-luggage office is situated in the terminal’s ‘outer porch’ area.
Baby care facilities are available at various toilets within the terminal. The on-site 24-hour medical centre can assist with emergencies.
Bus: There are no public bus services at present – travellers should arrange in advance with their tour operator or accommodation for shuttle transfers between their hotel and the airport. There are also travel counters in the lobby where transport can be arranged upon arrival.
Taxi: Taxis are available from outside the terminal. The journey time into Hambantota is up to 50 minutes, and fares vary – it is advisable to agree the rate before boarding the taxi.
Conference and business:
Currently, business facilities are restricted to basic communications services and business/VIP lounges on the second level of the terminal. The new airport hotel, which is due to open in 2015, will house meeting rooms. A new Convention Centre is also under construction close to the airport.
All areas of the terminal are accessible to wheelchair users and disabled toilets are provided. Passengers with special needs should inform their airline in advance of travel.
There are 400 parking spaces for long- and short-term use immediately adjacent to the terminal building.
Self-drive car hire is not recommended – the convention here is to rent a vehicle with a driver; this can be arranged at the transport counters in the airport lobby.
There are currently no hotels near Hambantota Mattala Rajapaksa International Airport; however a new hotel is due to open adjacent to the terminal in 2015. A choice of accommodation is available in Hambantota and along the southern Sri Lankan coast.
