A semi-circular belt of sand, Unawatuna beach is set in an attractive bay protected at both ends by a headland. The water here is calm for most of the year and there are a number of watersports on offer, including snorkelling and wreck-diving.
Other interesting activities include cookery lessons and yoga classes. Unawatuna also offers a vibrant nightlife, although it can sometimes get very noisy.
music blaring from bars at all hours of the night during high season is common place.Kingfisher‘s beach bar is a pleasant place for a drink, as is the chilled-out Koha Surf Lounge, while the backpackerorientated.
Pink Elephant and Lucky Tuna are a little livelier. A number of places including Happy Banana, Riddim and nearby Jungle Beach Restaurant host regular discos in season; ask around when you arrive.

Riddim Protruding out onto the newly replenished beach at the eastern end of the bay, this timber-and-cement bar hosts regular discos in season as well as impromptu live music evenings (usually followed by an in-house DJ) with expat rock band, The Butchers. Good for sunset drinks
