Sri lanka Diving and Snorkeling

Sri lanka Diving & Snorkeling

Sri Lanka’s  Diving & Snorkelling scene is developing along with its tourist act. Diving is very popular in the resorts of Negombo, Bentota, Unawatuna (Galle) and Hikkaduwa – which is the best place for diving.Few Excellent places for diving and snorkeling can be found right around the coast but most are still occasionally visited. The west coast south of Colombo has been the centre of diving but other, better, areas are ready to take off as the infrastructure develops.  .There are a large number of ship-wrecks off Negombo, Akurala, Hikkaduwa, Galle and Kirinda with a few sunken aircraft in shallow waters for divers to visit.Due to the monsoon seasons, west coast diving and snorkelling is generally best from November to April whilst the east coast waters are at their calmest April – September.

Great Basses Reefs(located on a reef 13 km off the coast of Yala National Park)  -It’s tricky to access and conditions are very fickle but this might be the finest dive site in Sri Lanka

Bar Reef Little-exploited and near-pristine reefs where dolphins play in their hundreds

Batticaloa – The HMS Hermes, a WWII-era wreck, is for Tec divers, but the rock dives around here are for everyone

Pigeon Island National Park  – A shallow coral reef with tons of fish and sharks that’s equally satisfying to snorkel or dive
